The Council of Catholic Bishops in Rwanda has issued a statement informing priests, consecrated persons and all Christians that the teachings of the Church on Christian marriage have not changed and that it cannot bless same-sex couples.

The Catholic bishops in Rwanda have given detailed information on the blessing given to a man and a woman living together illegally by the Church and same-sex couples.

This announcement comes in a form that seems to contradict the contents of the letter called Fiducia supplicans (Faith to supplicate God) published by the office of Pope Francis on December 18, 2023, attracting a lot of controversy and concern about the blessing that would be given to a man and a woman living together illegally by The church and the blessing that would be given to those of the same sex.

In this announcement, they pointed out that the Church cannot bless same-sex relationships because it would contradict God's law and morality.

It says: "We, your bishops, are writing this announcement with the aim of removing confusion and comforting you after the letter has caused a lot of controversy and concern about the blessing given to a man and a woman living together in a way that is not approved by the Church and the one given to children of the same sex."

The Catholic Bishops' Conference explained that the letter did not change the teachings of the Church regarding the blessing of the sacrament of Holy Matrimony because it is intended for a man and a woman united in eternal love and for the purpose of procreation.

The statement goes on to say, “Blessing is praying to God and asking for His blessing when we pray for someone or something. The purpose of the blessing is to sanctify, heal and help the person to change. The blessing of a man and a woman living together in an illegitimate manner by the Church should not be confused with the sacrament of marriage. Homosexuality is completely against God's law and our culture."

In this announcement, the Bishops of Rwanda showed that the Church cannot bless same-sex marriages because it would contradict God's law and morality.

They said, "In conclusion, the Catholic bishops' conference in Rwanda informs priests, lay people, all Christians and people with a godly heart that the church's teachings on Christian marriage have not changed.

For this reason, the Church cannot bless same-sex marriages because it would contradict God's law and our culture."
