Lawrence University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship specializing in Francophone Studies of Sub-Saharan Africa, the Maghreb, or the Caribbean.
The French and Francophone Studies department offers a full major in literature and civilization and provides courses that meet Lawrence’s intermediate language competency requirement.
Lawrence is a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, WI. Competitive candidates for this appointment will be committed to teaching excellence, undergraduate advising, and should demonstrate evidence of an active and ongoing research agenda.

Aim and Benefits of Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies
The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching French courses at introductory and advanced levels and will also possess the ability to teach within an interdisciplinary generalist curriculum and hold a strong secondary specialization in at least one of the following fields: Global Studies, Ethnic Studies, or Gender Studies. Native or near-native fluency in French and English is required. This is a full-time tenure-track appointment to begin on September 1, 2022. Ph.D. in hand or evidence of imminent completion required.
Requirements for Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies Qualification
The successful candidate will teach a full-time load of six courses per year, two per 10-week term, ranging from introductory French language and culture to advanced literary and cultural studies seminars in French. Courses at the advanced level will represent the full range of Francophone cultures (sometimes in dialogue with French culture). They will also contribute regularly to affiliated interdisciplinary programs (as listed above), as well as Lawrence’s signature multidisciplinary first-year seminar program. Interest and experience in study abroad is highly desirable.
