Rwandan troops will continue to fight Mozambican extremists who claim to be Islamists, according to an agreement reached between the two countries.
The agreement was signed in Kigali on Monday between Mozambique Commander-in-Chief Admiral (Amiral) Joaquim Mangrasse and Commander-in-Chief of the Rwandan Armed Forces General Jean Bosco Kazura.
About 1,000 Rwandan troops and police were deployed to Mozambique in July 2021, as militants launched a series of attacks on towns and cities in northern Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province.
Rwanda later said that the number had risen to 2,000 with a total of 2,000 soldiers and police.
The deployment has led to the recapture of key parts of the hands of the militants by the Rwandan-backed Mozambique forces, as well as those from the South African Economic Community (SADC). ).
But reports from People say that's just what's happening.
Thirty abductees were rescued this week in the northern Nangade district, according to Mozambique officials, in connection with a joint operation by the military and other SADC member states.
More than 800,000 people have been displaced from Mozambique due to the violence that began in 2017.
